The West has often gone unscathed time and again for cultural appropriation of India and misrepresenting our culture and facts. Seldom are they held accountable for the same. This time an Italian coffee brand got called out on Twitter for using the wrong map of India on its packaging. Here’s what happened on Twitter.
Italian Coffee Brand Sells Products With Wrong Map Of India On Packaging
Twiteratti Anshul Saxena (@AskAnshul) tweeted a picture of bottles of coffee powder sold by the Italian coffee brand, illycaffè. The coffee brand, illycaffè sells its Arabica Selection of Indian coffee powder on Flipkart. On the packaging, you can see the wrong map of India in brown colour. The map is wrong as it shows that Kashmir is not part of India and Bangladesh is.
In his caption, Anshul Saxena says “Dear @illycaffe Kindly correct the map of India. Do not sell your items with incorrect map. Rectify your packaging.” And that’s not all! He tweets another picture of the brand selling its product (with the wrong map of India on its packaging) on the Indian e-commerce platform, Flipkart. Saxena captions the picture, “Dear @Flipkart Why are you selling this item with incorrect map of India? This is shameful. Let @illycaffe first rectify its packaging with correct map.”
Netizens Hold It Responsible For Gross Negligence; Demand Action ASAP
In no time, this picture went viral garnering over 31.1k views, 615 re-tweets and 1393 likes. The Italian coffee brand replied that they regret the mistakes made on the India map and they take full responsibility for it. However, illycaffè goes on to state that it takes time to create a new can. So, they are working at full speed to make the new package available with the correct India map while removing the old one completely.

Netizens aren’t having any of it. Twitteratis have slammed the Italian coffee brand for making such a big mistake of selling their product with the wrong map of India on its packaging. Many called on both Flipkart and illycaffè to make amends immediately. Twitterati, @Su_MoBhakt comments “Unacceptable. Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh is an integral part of India from 1000’s of years. Not like Wales, Northern Ireland or Scotland! @Flipkart should stop selling all these products immediately.”
Well, what do you think of this negligence by the Italian coffee brand?
