Yamuna River is the largest tributary of the Ganges originating from the Yamunotri glacier. Moreover, it is a holy river in Hinduism. However, its quality has degraded after the growing population and industrialisation. Recently, the population level has reached a new level and is a matter of concern for everyone! Take a look at the pile of garbage at the banks — some of which is returned by the Yamuna River!
Yamuna River Returns The Unwanted Gift From Humans!
Yamuna River passes through states like Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, and Delhi-NCR. A variety of uses for river water include irrigation, drinking, industrial use, bathing, laundry, and more. It is also regarded as one of India’s holiest rivers, into which devotees submerge deity statues and scatter the cremated remains of their loved ones.
Some of the sources of pollution in the River Yamuna are domestic wastewater, industrial effluents, idol immersion, pesticide residue, and untreated sewage. In comparison to other areas where the river flows, the NCR portion has the most pollution.

Take A Look At The Pile Of Garbage!
Twitter users have shared a few pics of the trash collected at banks of rivers. In addition to garbage, the river has formed foam on the surface. It is primarily because of the chemical discharge from industries.
This pic shared by Supriya Sahu IAS of Twitter shows it. Though it looks like ice floating on the river’s surface, the foam is filled with pollutants.
This image of the Poiya Ghat shows the aftermath of rain filling the river to the brim!
There is an image of Yamunanagar in Haryana that stands witness to the pollution. It shows a giant pile of garbage right next to the river.
And how can we forget the overflowing garbage right behind the Taj Mahal? Though the monument is known for its beauty and is a sign of love, the trash collected in its backyard is not so appealing.
