On Wednesday evening, passengers of the Pushpak Express were struck by the oncoming Karnataka Express in Pachora, Jalgaon district, Maharashtra. As per reports, the passengers jumped off the train after rumours of a fire in one of the coaches panicked people onboard. At least 13 passengers have been reported dead in the incident so far.
Jalgaon Accident: Pushpak Express Passengers Jump Off Train Fearing Fire
On January 22, the Pushpak Express, travelling from Lucknow to Mumbai, experienced a devastating tragedy. According to India Today, a rumour about a fire aboard one of the train’s coaches caused panic among passengers. They pulled the emergency chain to stop the train and many of them even jumped off and landed on a parallel track. Unfortunately, they were hit by the Karnataka Express, heading from Bengaluru to Delhi, which was coming from the opposite direction.
The catastrophic train accident occurred near the Paranda Railway Station in Jalgaon around 4:19 PM. The collision resulted in several casualties and injuries. As per reports, the exact cause of the alarm chain pulling is still being investigated by the railway authorities. For now, the Railways has said that no spark or fire was noticed inside the coach.
Death Toll Rises To 13, Several Injured
The death toll from the train accident in Jalgaon has risen to 13. Several passengers also sustained major injuries and were rushed to the Civil Hospital in Jalgaon for immediate medical assistance. The Railway Ministry has announced a compensation of ₹1.5 lakh each for the victims’ families. Furthermore, they also announced ₹50,000 for people who were seriously injured and ₹5,000 for those who sustained minor injuries.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the victims’ families in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He said, “Anguished by the tragic accident on the railway tracks in Jalgaon, Maharashtra. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and pray for the speedy recovery of all the injured. Authorities are providing all possible assistance to those affected.”
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also expressed grief over the Jalgaon accident and announced a compensation of ₹5 lakh for the families of the victims.
