In a historic moment, Japan Airlines recently announced their first-ever female president. They named Mitsuko Tottori as the next president of the company and she will take office from April 1. This is considered a huge milestone because ever since its establishment in 1951, this is the first time a female leader will be commanding the office from the forefront.
Who is Mitsuko Tottori – The First-Ever Female President Of Japan Airlines?
59-year-old Mitsuko Tottori has been named the next president of Japan Airlines. This is the first time in the seven-decade history of the airline that a female president will lead the company. So, who is Mitsuko Tottori and how did she reach this milestone? Well, to begin with, she is a former flight attendant of the airline who has been working for them for almost 40 years!
She began her career with Japan Airlines in 1985 as a flight attendant. Then she worked her way up and became a director for cabin crew in 2015. This move comes as a massive promotion for Mitsuko and she will step in as the president on April 1, 2024. Women Leading From The Front In The Aviation Sector
Sadly, Japan Airlines isn’t the only airline in the aviation sector that lacks female representation in its top brass. There are very few mainstream airlines that have female leadership in top positions. As per a survey by aviation specialist website FlightGlobal, only 12 women lead the top 100 airlines in the world!
In fact, it is rather rare for women to take over such high positions in Japan. This appointment also comes at a time when Japan is facing flak for its high gender pay gap and lack of gender diversity in workplaces.
Well, we hope to see many more women taking over such important roles in big companies in the future!
