The region of unparalleled beauty, Jammu and Kashmir, was struck by two major earthquakes today. Pictures and videos of the quakes have been circulating on social media ever since. The earthquakes happened one right after the other and their epicentre was in the Baramulla region. Here are all of the other important details that you would need to know about these two earthquakes that struck the Baramulla region in Jammu and Kashmir.
2 Earthquakes Of 4.9 And 4.8 Magnitude Strike Baramulla
According to an article which was recently published by The New Indian Express or TNIE, the tremors caused panic across the region on the morning of Tuesday, August 20. The very first earthquake hit in the wee hours of the morning at 6:45 AM.
It measured a total of 4.9 magnitudes on the Richter scale. The latitude and longitude of the earthquake were 34.17 north and 74.16 east. The depth of the earthquake was five kilometres. Soon after this first earthquake, a second one followed.
This one measured 4.8 on the Richter scale and was ten kilometres deep. The epicentre was the same as the previous earthquake – Baramulla and it hit at 6:52 AM. The latitude and longitude of this earthquake was 34.20 north and 74.31 east.
No Loss Of Life Or Serious Damage To Property Has Occurred
Fortunately though, despite the widespread and shortlived panic in the valley, no loss of life was reported owing to the earthquakes. No severe damage to property has been reported. However, many people took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to share pictures and videos of the two earthquakes.
Videos of ceiling fans oscillating back and forth and CCTV cameras shaking from the tremors have been captured and are making rounds on the Internet. Many people have also shared pictures of cracks on their walls after the earthquakes.
