According to an article that was recently published by the Khaleej Times, staff supervision during mealtimes is essential to monitor students’ food consumption. This will ensure everyone has access to meals (except when fasting), and watch for concerning behaviours such as eating disorders or food-related bullying.

Strict prohibitions are in place for certain items, including alcohol, fizzy drinks, pork and allergen-containing foods. External food delivery services like Talabat and Deliveroo are not permitted during school hours to maintain control over nutritional standards.

The guidelines emphasise robust allergy management protocols. Schools must maintain detailed records of students’ food allergies and intolerances, ensure proper food labelling, and establish clear procedures for handling allergic reactions.

Staff must be trained in these protocols, and medicines must be appropriately stored and labelled. Parent engagement forms a crucial component, with schools required to share healthy eating guidelines and information about restricted foods.

These guidelines highlight items to avoid, such as fried foods, which can contribute to health issues like obesity and type 2 diabetes. The policy also promotes inclusivity by requiring schools to respect the religious, cultural and ethical dietary needs of minority groups. Students must be involved in planning and improving food services through feedback mechanisms.

Staff training is mandatory, with teachers and canteen workers required to attend training sessions. These are conducted by the Abu Dhabi Public Health Center or the ADPHC to promote healthy eating habits effectively.
