The wait is nearly over! Commuters in Kanpur are all set to experience smoother and faster travel with the upcoming launch of the Kanpur Metro underground stretch, expected to open by mid-April. The Kanpur Metro underground stretch will connect IIT Kanpur to Kanpur Central Railway Station. It also introduced five new underground stations along the route: Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha, Nayaganj, and Kanpur Central. This expansion brought the total number of metro stations in the city to 14.

Travelling from one end of the city to the other will now take approximately 25 minutes—yes, you read that right—with the fare capped at just ₹40. For regular commuters who often navigate congested roads, this is a breath of fresh air. Areas that previously required long rides through traffic can now be accessed conveniently and affordably via the metro.
Trial Runs, Safety Checks & Final Touches Underway

The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) is currently conducting final trial runs. These trial runs ensure all systems operate smoothly before the grand opening. These trials include thorough inspections of the train systems, signals, and station facilities.

The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) is scheduled to inspect the underground stretch in early April. Upon receiving approval, the route will be declared ready for public use—possibly in just a few weeks!
