More About Kanwar Yatra
Kanwar basically refers to a genre of religious performances where participants ritually carry water from a holy source. The water is carried in containers suspended on either side of a pole. However, The Kanwar Yatra is an annual pilgrimage of the Shiva devotees. They are mostly known as Kanwarias or Bhole and they undertake the holy pilgrimage to Haridwar, Gaumukh, and Gangotri in Uttarakhand and Sultanganj in Bihar. Millions of devotees take part in the Kanwar Yatra to fetch holy water from the river Ganga which is later carried across hundreds of miles to dispense as offerings in their local Śiva shrines. There are also other specific temples where the offerings are done. These holy temples include the Pura Mahadeva and Augharnath temple in Meerut; and Kashi Vishwanath, Baidyanath, and Deoghar in Jharkhand.
