Comedian Kapil Sharma is a household name now. Earlier, his shows were on national television and now, he made his way on Netflix. What a nice upgrade, Kapil! For this episode of Tere Gully Mein, our Editor-In-Chief, Kamiya Jani, had the pleasure of exploring the food of Amritsar in Punjab with the comedian. It was evident that he knew the best food joints in his hometown and hence, the food trail was amazing. The first stop of the food trail at Kartar’s Pehelwan Kulcha was grand.
Kapil Sharma, Shahana Goswami & Nandita Das Were At Kartar’s Pehelwan Kulcha In Amritsar
After a brief drive, Kamiya and Kapil were at the famous Kartar’s Pehelwan Kulcha. There, we met his film Zwigato’s director Nandita Das and his co-star, Shahana Goswami. Right before entering the shop, Kamiya read out loud the name written on its signage and jokingly said, “Pehelwan bankar hi vapis jane wali hoon main.”
Soon everyone was presented with plates of stuffed buttery Amritsari chole kulcha. However, Kapil demanded more butter! Kamiya was taken aback by the amount of butter already on the kulcha, yet our guest wanted more. So, he told her that the real white butter was the magical ingredient in this dish.
Next, Kapil shared with us that in Amritsar, chole becomes complementary with almost every dish. “Humari zindagi mein bohot zyada ghus chuke hai. Kulche, bhature, mathi ke saath bhi chole milte hai par sabka aapko flavour alag aayge,” he said. They later paired kulchas with tall glasses of lassi and it was a gastronomical affair for everyone.

Growing Up He Never Had Any Pocket Money
He randomly shared with us that during his school days, kulchas were priced at ₹2 and with butter, it cost ₹3 only. This was around 20 to 25 years ago! This information prompted Kamiya to ask him about his pocket money.
He told us there was no concept of pocket money in his family but added that once in a while ₹2 to ₹3 were handed over to him when he had the urge to eat good food in school. Tell us in the comments below if you were the pocket money-receiving kid or the ask-and-get-money kid.
