Over the last few months, many incidents have to light that have thrown into question the food safety standards in India. Many incidents have come to light where questionable things were found in food, and eateries were caught using and selling old, unhealthy or expired products. Recently, a similar incident came to light where a pregnant woman found a dead baby snake in a pre-mix food pack given to beneficiaries of a government scheme.

According to an article which was recently published by The Times Of India or TOI, this particular incident took place in the Kolhapur region of Maharashtra. The woman who received the food packet was from the town of Palus in Sangli district.

The pre-mix food packet received by the woman was owing to a nutrition scheme by the government. The scheme is for pregnant women, lactating mothers and babies between the ages of six months and three years.

If reports are to go by, the incident came to light on Tuesday, July 2, 2024. Raja Dayanidhi, who is the district collector of Sangli, ordered a thorough inspection. In order to find the lapses in checks, an inquiry will be done.

As per the officials cited in the TOI article, the state recently hired a private company. They provide the food mix. Prior to this, cereals and grains were given to the beneficiaries separately. This change occurred just a few months ago it is suspected that the lapse happened there.

This incident serves as a stark reminder to all about food safety and hygiene. Authorities need to be more vigilant and stringent in their checks. Consumers, too, should be alert when receiving food from outside.

If any untoward or unsavoury thing is found in your food, it is imperative that you report it immediately to the concerned authorities.
