Bird strikes may not initially sound like a huge concern in aviation but they can be quite dangerous whenever they happen. The Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport or the NSCBI in Kolkata is particularly dealing with this problem. The authorities recently held a meeting with the aim of figuring out what can be done to remedy the situation. Here are all of the other important details that you would need to know about Kolkata airport and the frequent bird strikes there.

Kolkata Airport Reports 18 Bird Strikes In Just 11 Months

According to an article which was recently published by CNBC TV18, there has been an increasing number of bird strikes at Kolkata airport. If reports are to go by, in the last 11 months alone, there have been a total of 18 bird strikes at NSCBIA.

As per the statement made by an official in a meeting on the matter and cited in the CNBC TV18 article, these bird strikes happened between January 1 and November 7, 2024. This has sparked a number of concerns about safety as well as environmental impact.

Recently, a meeting was chaired by the Home Secretary of West Bengal, Nandini Chakraborty. The meeting was held on Saturday, November 9, 2024, and discussed a number of strategies on how the situation could be improved.

Authorities Discuss Plans Of Action To Mitigate Risks

This particular meeting was convened by the Director of the Kolkata Airport, Dr. Pravat Ranjan Beuria. The Airfirled Environment Management Committee or the AEMC urged the local authorities to seek solutions to this particular problem.

In a post made on X (formerly known as Twitter), Kolkata airport shared visuals from the meeting held in order to figure out a solution to this problem.

Officials mentioned that garbage dumps, butcher shops, etc. attract a lot of birds. It is hoped that the officials will be able to find a solution to the problem soon.
