Many of us have travelled between Kolkata and Bangkok by flight before. And now Kolkata is about to get connected with Bangkok by road in the next few years. The Kolkata-Bangkok highway is going to be a prominent road connection between these two cities and also enhance better links between India and Thailand. It is expected that the trilateral highway is going to be operational in about 4 years. We are super excited about this massive infrastructure coming up. Here are some important deets of this road.

  • This road between Kolkata and Bangkok is going to be passing through various places in countries falling in between the route.
  • This highway project connecting Kolkata and Bangkok is falling under the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) project.
  • It is expected to bring a major scope to boost and enhance transportation and convenient travel experiences.
  • Along with the improvement in connection and transportation, trade between places may also see some better changes on this trilateral highway.
  • The project has already been started. Some parts of the highway are under progress, according to a report by the Free Press Journal.
  • Also, the construction is going on in full swing so that the highway can be opened for access in due time.
  • The Tamu to Kalewa stretch of this highway will cost about US$ 27.28 million.

The Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Chamber of Commerce conducted a business conclave recently. In this event, many ministers from several countries have reportedly spoken about the Kolkata Bangkok highway. Recently, Vijavat Isarabhakdi, the Thailand Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs stated that most of the construction in Thailand is already completed, according to a report by News 18. Aung Naing Oo, Myanmar’s Commerce Minister stated that the country needs about 2-3 years to complete the leftover part of the trilateral highway project.

Reports state that the highway is going to be about 2,800 km-2,820 km long. The News 18 report states the places in Myanmar, Thailand, and India that the road is going to pass through.

1. Places in India:

  • Guwahati
  • Kohima
  • Kolkata
  • Moreh
  • Srirampur
  • Siliguri

2. Places in Myanmar:

  • Kalewa
  • Mandalay
  • Tamu
  • Yangon

3. Places in Thailand:

  • Mae Sot
  • Sukhothai
