The oldest functional bookshop in the city is Dasgupta and Co. and this century-old place is about to get a grand makeover.
This Kolkata Bookshop Is All Set To Get A Library; That Too For Free!
Nestled in College Street, Dasgupta and Co. is in the process to add a free library to the iconic establishment. Started long back in 1886, a part of this legendary bookstore is going to be transformed into this new setup, according to a report by The Hindu. With the advancement of technology and people using digital modes for money transactions, the accounts department on the second floor of Dasgupta and Co. was not coming to much use. An area of about 2000 sq ft was simply left there, with no use at all. And now this empty space will be used for transforming the premise into a library.
Arabinda Dasgupta is the managing director of the bookshop and he shared that the new library will open its doors before Durga Puja this year. If you want to visit this library after it begins its operations, make sure to be there between 12 PM and 6 PM only on working days.
The New Free Library Will Be Of A Major Help To A Lot Of People
This bookshop is seeing a huge number of students and people coming to the bookshop from all around, especially from rural places. Though there is an increase in customers willing to purchase books, unfortunately not everyone can afford all the time. This library will be a major help for everyone as one can avail of books for free of cost. Running since so many decades, this store is nothing less than a treasure and many records and old books will be available at this library.
