Lakshadweep Updates Tourist Permit Rules
The Lakshadweep administration has made it easier for tourists to visit by relaxing its entry permit rules. According to NDTV, as per a circular issued on April 29, 2026, travellers no longer need a local sponsor to apply for a permit. Earlier, visitors had to rely on a resident or authorised local person, which made planning difficult. Now, this requirement has been completely removed, making the process simpler while still keeping security checks in place.
Another change that has been introduced is the removal of the Police Clearance Certificate (PCC). Earlier, travellers had to get this document from their home state and upload it, which often caused delays. Now, instead of this, the Lakshadweep Police will carry out the security checks internally after the application is submitted, making the process faster and simpler.

Which Rules Are Still Applicable?
Some rules still remain in place. NDTV reported that travellers must apply for their permit at least 14 days before the trip so authorities can verify the details. They also need to give information on which islands they plan to visit and travel dates. You will be given entry only to the islands listed in the approved permit.
The administration has also set clear transit rules. Travellers can only pass through Kavaratti or Agatti, which are the main hubs, and the transit time cannot exceed 12 hours. Officials have also advised travellers to book their flight tickets only after getting the permit approved. This can help avoid last-minute issues.
The application process is still online through the official e-permit portal. Travellers need to fill in their personal details, upload a valid ID like Aadhaar or passport, and submit photographs along with their travel plan. Along with the permit fee, visitors also pay a green tax that helps protect the environment. Once approved, the permit is usually valid for up to 30 days, and in some cases, authorities may allow extensions.
