It was the first month of Delhi government’s free-electricity scheme and it left a lot of Delhiites happy! How? Because they paid absolutely nothing to the board for September’s power bills. It was free!
How did it happen?
In an attempt to conserve electricity, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government had announced free electricity, of up to 200 units, for domestic consumers. This was later on extended to tenants residing in the national Capital as well, under the Mukhyamantri Kirayedar Bijli Meter Yojna. The announcement was made in August and was executed from September onwards.

Recent data provided by the power department shows that almost 28% (around 14.64 lakh people) of the total 52.27 lakh domestic consumers in the city paid Rs 0 towards their electricity bills. In fact, the Delhi CM lauded the move in a tweet, saying that it was an example of smart governance and how every family was now trying to consume less that 200 units of electricity.
Seems like Delhi is really keen on saving up; and with the winters coming in, there is a very high possibility that the consumption might reduce further. Who knows, by the end of this year, the figure of people paying zero amount for electricity bills might move to 50% or more.
