In Jammu & Kashmir, the sale of poor chicken has raised questions about norms for food safety and public health. Social media is overflowing with reports of D-grade chicken being sold at the market. It has raised alarms among both shops and locals who worry about the negative effects of eating substandard poultry. Here is everything you need to know about the poor-quality chicken sold in J&K.

In J&K, Locals Are Concerned Over The Chicken Quality!

The Food Safety Department recently seized 10 quintals of chicken and pork from a shop in Parimpora district that was being sold in violation of the Food Safety Standards Act.

On the spot, the entire quantity was burned, and samples were taken for future legal action. According to a report by Greater Kashmir, Shagufta Jalal, Deputy Commissioner, J&K Drug and Food Control Organisation, stated that measures had been taken to address the problem.

He also said that they have closed stores that offer chicken of poor quality for less money. Raids were carried out in Parimpora, Khayam, and other areas close to the Bund side where it was discovered that chicken was being sold for a surprisingly low price. Further, he pointed out that the samples had been taken from these areas, and the outcomes were pending.

Health Risk Related To The Poultry Meat

Numerous complaints about the market’s accessibility of subpar chicken have been made to the government. They cannot establish whether the chicken is of D-grade quality, poses any health risks, or fails to meet minimum standards until they have received the test data.

He emphasised earlier departmental operations, mentioning the seizure of numerous quintals of chicken in Kashmir. Moreover, he claimed that it was discovered that the storage conditions for these chickens were unclean. It posed a serious risk to the general public’s health.

Although there haven’t been any complaints about the availability of subpar chicken in the market, Director of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs for Kashmir, Riyaz Ahmad Sofi, told Greater Kashmir that if this is discovered, suitable action will be taken.
