Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 is expected to garner a crowd of 45 crore pilgrims over 45 days. In a bid to reduce plastic waste that will be generated by the massive turnout, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has launched the ‘One Plate, One Bag’ initiative. Volunteers of the organisation are distributing cloth bags, steel plates and glasses to ensure that the world’s largest religious congregation is plastic-free. Scroll on to learn more about this.
One Plate, One Bag Initiative At Maha Kumbh 2025
‘One Plate, One Bag’ initiative, spearheaded by RSS, aims to reduce plastic wastage at the Maha Kumbh 2025. According to NDTV, the campaign was inaugurated in Sector 18 on the Old GT Road in Prayagraj by RSS Sah-Sarkaryavah Krishna Gopal. With this campaign, they aim to replace plastic bags and disposable items with more sustainable alternatives.
Reportedly, around 70,000 cloth bags have already been handed out from the six distribution centres on the mela ground. Furthermore, 20 lakh steel plates and glasses have been collected from across the country to replace single-use plastic and thermocol utensils. These plates and glasses are being distributed to langars (community kitchens) and food outlets within the Maha Kumbh area.

Aims To Reduce Plastic Waste And Promote Sustainable Alternatives
The ‘One Plate, One Bag’ initiative at Maha Kumbh aligns with the broader goal of ensuring a cleaner, greener environment during this spiritual mela. Earlier, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also spoke about the importance of eco-friendly practices during Maha Kumbh. He urged devotees to avoid single-use plastics and switch to reusable and sustainable alternatives.
According to RSS, these steel plates and glasses will ensure that pilgrims coming to Maha Kumbh Mela have access to eco-friendly alternatives. This will also help reduce plastic waste significantly.
This is an amazing initiative to promote sustainability and reduce plastic usage. We hope this reaches more and more people attending the Maha Kumbh and helps spread awareness about the growing issue of plastic waste around the world.
