The JNPT to Navi Mumbai Airport corridor will revolutionise Maharashtra’s road connectivity and logistics network. The Union Cabinet announced the development of a six-lane access-controlled greenfield stretch of highway that will link Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) to Chowk. The ambitious high-speed corridor will improve freight movement efficiency as well as extend seamless connectivity to JNPT and the newly proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). The project will be constructed in the Build, Operate, and Transfer (BOT) mode with an estimated investment of ₹4,500.62 crore.
JNPT To Navi Mumbai Airport Corridor: An Economically Crucial Connection
Presently, the journey from JNPT to major highways like NH-48 and the Mumbai-Pune Expressway takes approximately 2-3 hours. With NMIA, set to become operational in 2025, the need for direct and efficient road connectivity will increase substantially. The JNPT to Navi Mumbai Airport Corridor is set to meet the requirement, providing quicker and easier transportation of goods and people.
As reported by Mumbai Now, this 29.219 km-long highway will start from JNPA Port (Pagote) and extend to Chowk. The corridor will facilitate logistics efficiency by simplifying the movement between the port and the airport, reducing congestion on existing routes.
The new highway will facilitate a safe and efficient movement of goods, especially for industries and enterprises that are dependent on JNPT for export and import. It will also be a vital link for the Golden Quadrilateral (GQ) segment of NH-48, facilitating smooth traffic movement and decreased travel time.
Besides enhancing logistics, the project will also stimulate economic growth in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Pune. Enhanced infrastructure will attract industry, create jobs, and stimulate industrial growth in the area. The enhanced network of roads will also support real estate development and tourism in the surrounding areas.
