Mumbai: 8.85 Km Driverless Pod Taxi Corridor Coming Soon; Know Key Routes, Stations & More

Mumbaikars, an amazing driverless pod taxi system is coming to your city soon! These taxis will help ease last-mile congestion in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), a premier business district in Mumbai. Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis has confirmed that the first phase of this project will be completed within 20 months. Here’s how these taxis will work.

Pod Taxi System To Ease Traffic In Mumbai

The foundation stone for Mumbai’s Automated Rapid Transit System (ARTS), popularly known as the Pod Taxi, was laid recently in the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). According to a report by NDTV, an 8.85 km elevated driverless corridor with 22 stations will soon come up in the city, providing first- and last-mile connectivity to suburban rail and metro stations.

This corridor aims to ease traffic in one of Mumbai’s busiest business districts. The project by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority is planned with 22 air-conditioned stations spaced 200 metres apart. The system will be implemented in phases, with Phase 1 covering 3.36 km between Kurla Terminal and Bandra (East).

AI-Powered 6-seater Taxis

According to The Times of India, the initial corridor will have key stations at LBS Marg, MMRDA Pay and Park (G Block), BDB Gate 11, Kalanagar, Old MMRDA building, and the Excise Department. Officials say these pod taxis will be six-seaters and fully automated.

They will run on batteries and will be powered by artificial intelligence. These pod taxis will operate on a dedicated guideway at speeds of up to 40 kmph, with a headway of just 15 seconds. The best part is that they will stop only at stations selected by passengers. This will reduce travel time and improve overall efficiency.

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis also performed the bhoomi pujan for the Phase 1 stretch, formally launching work on this much-anticipated project. The project is expected to cater to around 1.1 lakh daily commuters by 2031.
