Mumbai local trains are the lifeline of the city and see lakhs of commuters every day. To make commuting easier, a passenger group has now proposed the concept of ‘Pink Platforms’ at suburban stations to make boarding safer and easier for women. Here’s what we know about the proposal so far.
Pink Platform Proposed On Mumbai Local Train Stations
‘Pink Platform’ is definitely a great idea for women commuters travelling on Mumbai local trains, but it is not guaranteed that it will become a reality. According to Mid-Day, the concept has been proposed by the Mumbai Rail Pravasi Sangh. The group wants a section of the platform at the suburban stations to be reserved for women so they can wait safely and comfortably.
This informal proposal by the passenger association was discussed at the first Suburban Railway Users’ Consultative Committee (SRUCC) meeting at the Central Railway headquarters in Mumbai CSMT on July 24. The proposal suggests painting a section of the platform pink and marking it as a waiting area for women.

A Pilot Feasibility Study May Be Conducted
According to Mid-Day, the concept can make boarding more orderly and safer for women. Moreover, it could also help commuters identify ladies’ coaches more easily. The idea may be great, but implementing it might not be easy. Railway officials believe that differences in train configurations can make the implementation of this idea difficult. Ladies’ coaches are placed differently across Mumbai local trains. There are 12-car, 15-car and AC local trains, all of which have different coach configurations.
However, the proposal could be considered through a pilot feasibility study. The commuter group reportedly suggested another idea as well. It proposed redesigning ladies’ coaches using ergonomic standards for Indian women. The group wants grab handles with an ergonomic design, along with luggage racks and other fittings placed at a comfortable height.
