Known for her spectacular acting skills and undeniable beauty, Malavika Mohanan is a talented actress prominently recognised for her work in the South Indian film industry. A Malayali by ethnicity, Malavika is a Bombay girl through and through. In the latest episode of Sunday Brunch, Editor-in-Chief Kamiya Jani visited Malavika’s home to indulge in some authentic Malayali food. Malavika Mohanan Is Deeply Connected To Her Roots

Stepping into Malavika’s home in Mumbai felt like a visit to Kerala. Tradition was evident in every corner of her house. Malavika shared that it was her mother’s idea to keep the spirit of their hometown alive in their Mumbai residence. Speaking about her roots in Kerala, Malavika revealed that while many assume she was born and raised there, it’s only partially true. 

She was born in Kerala but moved to Mumbai when she was just two months old. Despite living in Mumbai her entire life, her parents ensured she stayed connected to her Malayali roots, embracing the language, traditions, and food of Kerala. Malavika finds it amusing when people question her fluency in Hindi, assuming otherwise due to her ethnicity. She clarified that Hindi and English are the languages she is most proficient in. 

Even though she’s lived in Mumbai all her life, her parents always ensured that she stayed connected to her roots in Kerala, embracing everything about the Malayali culture, from the language to the traditions to the food. She is truly connected to the culture of her hometown.

She Didn’t Find Films; Films Found Her

Continuing about her life in Mumbai, Malavika Mohanan shared that although both of her parents are from Kerala, her father first moved to Pune to study cinematography and later shifted to Mumbai to work in the film industry. Since her father was a cinematographer, we were curious if conversations about working in the film industry were common at home and if that led to her becoming an actress. 

Malavika Mohanan replied that although her father is part of the industry, her interest in movies didn’t come from her home. However, the artistic inclination in her was nurtured at home, as both of her parents are avid readers, and there were many conversations about art and culture. When it came to films, she didn’t find them—films found her.
