Malaysian PM Orders Complete Lockdown Till June 14 Amid Surge In Covid Cases

Cases in Malaysia are again on the rise, and to curb the further spread of the virus, Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, on Friday, May 28, announced a nationwide- complete lockdown from June 1. Read on to know more about it.

The Lockdown Will Be In Place From June 1 to 14

Prime minister Muhyiddin said that the lockdown would be in place from June 1 to June 14. And to curbs will be implicated in social and economic sectors, and only the essential services would remain functional. In terms of the covid cases- they have been spreading rampantly in Malaysia, partly due to the highly transmissible coronavirus variants. And speaking about the sudden surge in the cases, Muhyiddin in a statement, said,

“With the latest rise in daily cases showing a drastically upward trend, hospital capacity across the country to treat Covid-19 patients are becoming limited.”

Depending On the Cases, Other Non-Essential Sectors Will Be Allowed To Open After 2 Weeks Lockdown

For the covid cases, the country reported 8,290 new coronavirus cases on Friday, its fourth straight day of record infections and bringing the total number of cases to 549,514. Not only the cases, but the number of daily fatalities has also been on the rise, with a record daily toll of 63 earlier this week.

Around 1.7 million Malaysian’s have received at least one dose of the covid-19 vaccine. And if the cases in the country reduce in the first two weeks of the lockdown, the government will allow some sectors to reopen over the next four weeks.

The government has already rolled out over 300 billion ringgit ($72.60 billion) of stimulus packages since last year to help people amid this pandemic.
