Unless you live under a rock, you know that there has been a wave of protest and anger towards the Maldives. The controversy began when certain Maldivian ministers passed offensive comments when PM Narendra Modi visited Lakshadweep. This started a whirlwind of controversy and many Indians started boycotting Maldives. Instead, they started promoting Indian islands like Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Recently, a poll was taken to see whether Gen Z preferred Maldives or Lakshadweep. Here’s how it went.

If there is a topic right now that is really hot, it is Maldives. Throughout the country, people are boycotting travelling to this erstwhile popular tourist destination. This was after some Maldivian ministers made offensive remarks regarding PM Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep.

The outrage that ensued over the comments has not settled down yet. Many celebrities and notable personalities partook in a campaign that promoted Indian Islands instead of foreign ones. Lakshadweep was the name that was everywhere.

But this raised the question, which destination does the Gen Z prefer? A poll posted by one of the users on the social discovery app Hunch revealed that 68.9 per cent of Gen Z kids now prefer Lakshadweep over Maldives. Only 31.1 per cent of Gen Z still retained their desire to visit Maldives.

What Does It Say About The Influence Of Socio-Political Climate On Travel?

A total of 1,112 people responded to the poll. The poll results are indicative of how the socio-political climate of a particular country can significantly affect travel and tourism. Whoever believes that living an apolitical life is possible, should definitely revisit their opinions.
