Man Caught Smoking Beedi In Lavatory Of Bangalore-Bound IndiGo Flight; Arrested On Landing

Unfortunately, it’s not a common thing to find flyers secretly smoking in flight lavatories, putting the lives of other passengers at risk. In yet another such unfortunate incident, a man was caught smoking a beedi in the lavatory of a Bangalore-bound IndiGo flight. Here’s how the crew dealt with this.

IndiGo Passenger Caught Smoking In Lavatory Of Flight Mid-Air

According to a report by The New Indian Express, a man flying on an IndiGo flight from Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport to Bangalore’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) was caught smoking a beedi in the lavatory of the flight.

An FIR filed by the Station Manager of Interglobe Aviation Limited (Indigo) informs how this incident came to light in the first place. As per this FIR, a cabin crew member of IndiGo, B M Puneeth smelled a burning smell emanating from the rear end of the aircraft just after it took off from Kolkata. He realised this burning smell came from the lavatory and he knocked on the door.

When the occupant, a man, opened the door, he held a matchbox in his hand. He was trying to flush a half-used beedi in the toilet. The cabin crew member immediately informed the Flight Captain about this. And as soon as the IndiGo flight landed at Bangalore’s Kempegowda International Airport, the man was arrested at around midnight.

The Man Was Arrested Upon Landing In Bangalore

He was then taken to the KIA police station had booked under Aircraft Rules 1937 for putting the safety of passengers at risk and then under Section 25(3b) for violating the rules regarding non-smoking inside the aircraft. The man is identified as G Karunakaran who was state on seat 24 A on flight 6e 487. This flight took off from Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport at 9:11 p.m. on September 3.

Smoking is banned on flights as it completely removes the fire hazard that may happen when there is smoking. Also, it’s banned to protect the health of both the crew and the passengers and also to keep the cabin air fresh.
