Mumbaikars residing near the Marine Drive area have recently experienced tremors like that of an earthquake. Marine Drive Buildings In Danger?
Residents, in their letter to the BMC, told that the removal of the tetrapods due to coastal work is the major reason why the residents are feeling such tremors. A resident from the area told that the tetrapods would absorb the shocks from the monsoon waves. And now, due to the removal of the tetrapods, the buildings in the marine drive area are feeling the impact of the waves.

Old Heritage Buildings Might Be Affected
Residents said that this is a serious matter and that continuous tremors for a long period of time might cause structural damage to the property. A few of the properties in the Marine Drive area are standing tall since the 1950s. Residents also said that the tremors, apparently caused due to the removal of the tetrapods might put the lives of the residents in danger too. Therefore, the residents have claimed that the buildings which are at moment in danger are more than 70 years old. The BMC has, however, told that the complaints regarding the situation will be initially verified. According to reports, monitoring devices have been installed in the area. They also said that there are four lines of ‘secant piles’ about 15 metres deep which will prevent the impact of sea waves.
