May 2025 Was One Of The Coldest Mays In Almost 100 Years Across India, Thanks To Early Monsoon!

Unlike Mays over the last few years, did last month feel a lot cooler to you? Well, according to reports, that’s because May 2025 was one of the coldest Mays in India in almost a century! Showcasing a significant shift in weather patterns across the country, last month saw early monsoon onset and widespread heavy rainfall, which resulted in lower-than-usual temperatures across India.

India Witnesses Coldest May In Almost A Century!

According to an India Today report, the country reported multiple weather records this May. For starters, India recorded temperatures below the long-term averages for May this year. In fact, at 36.63°C, Central India reported its third-lowest average maximum temperature since 1901. It was 2.63°C below normal, marking the coolest May in the region since 1933. Overall, India reported its coldest May in over 100 years this year!

Coming to South Peninsular India, the region witnessed its fifth-lowest maximum temperature on record. As per reports, the average temperature in the area was about 34.13°C, about 2.25°C below normal, this year. Furthermore, it was the lowest temperature recorded for May since 1955.

A Sign Of Global Warming?

Deviating sharply from the typically hot and dry weather usually associated with this month, May 2025 saw an early onset of the monsoon and heightened rainfall. However, experts believe that this isn’t something we can celebrate as the abruptness and scale of these shifts highlight the growing influence of climate change on long-standing weather patterns. They insist that such deviations reflect the increasingly volatile nature of climate change. They pointed out that fluctuations in temperature, unpredictable rainfall, and a surge in extreme weather events are clear signs of a climate system under growing strain.
