The Nartiang Monoliths consist of hundreds of stone pillars, varying in height from a few feet to over 20 feet. Erected between the 16th and 19th centuries, these monolithic stones were once just single blocks of granite. With perhaps the highest concentration of monoliths in one location and a wealth of historical and cultural value, the monoliths make for an impressive sight.
The positioning and arrangement of the monoliths reflected the social hierarchy and power dynamics of the Khasi society. The flat monoliths, or dolmens, are devoted to the women’s ancestors. The standing monoliths, or menhirs, are dedicated to the male ancestors. Moreover, skilled craftsmen. of that time meticulously shaped and placed those monoliths upright. This showcases the remarkable engineering capabilities of the Khasi people of that time.
