Meghalaya’s First Ropeway In Shillong
Meghalaya is now taking a step forward to increase tourism in the state and reduce traffic by building its first ropeway in Shillong. As per the Times of India report, this ropeway will be built by the French firm, Pomagalski S.A. (POMA), who are global experts in ropeways. Covering the distance of approximately 2.1 kilometres, it will connect Madan Laban to Shillong Peak. The cost of this project is around ₹175 Crore, and the project had already begun at the end of 2024.

This new project promises a mesmerising experience for the visitors who’ll be able to enjoy the pine forests, hills, and panoramic views of Shillong from a height. The route will give a breathtaking view of Shillong, making their trip unforgettable. This initiative is taken by the government considering the city’s traffic. As one of the best tourist destinations in India, the city often faces a lot of travelling issues, especially in hilly areas. The ropeway will help clear the traffic and make it easier for tourists to reach Shillong Peak.
The Meghalaya Ropeway Development Authority is handling the ropeway project. All the approvals for the forest and land are already cleared. The completion of this project is in full swing, and soon the tourists will be able to enjoy it. According to DD News, along with the ropeway, the government is also planning eco-tourism resorts and a skywalk at the Mawkdok viewpoint.
