Museum tickets in the UAE are not usually the first thing people think about on a weekend. But free entry? That changes things a bit. From May 16 to 18, several major museums and heritage spots across Abu Dhabi will open their doors for free to mark International Museum Day. So residents, tourists and probably a lot of bored people in group chats now have something different to do.
Abu Dhabi Museums Are Going Free For 3 Days
The free access includes some of the capital’s biggest cultural attractions, especially around the Saadiyat Cultural District on Saadiyat Island. And honestly, whether someone is into history, dinosaurs, old forts or just wants good photos under air conditioning, there’s a decent mix here.
Some People Are Going For Picasso, Others For The Dinosaur
Louvre Abu Dhabi will probably pull in huge crowds as usual. The museum’s famous dome still gets photographed almost as much as the art itself.
Right now, visitors can also catch the Picasso exhibition running until the end of May. It looks at how the artist kept returning to the human figure across different decades of his work. There are more than 130 pieces on display alongside works from Arab artists, too.
But a lot of younger visitors may end up more excited about the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi because, yes, Stan the T. rex is there.
The museum covers everything from space and meteorites to wildlife photography and prehistoric creatures. It’s the sort of place where adults pretend they’re taking kids but secretly enjoy it just as much.
Abu Dhabi’s History Is Also Getting Attention
For many residents, this weekend might also be a chance to finally visit places they’ve driven past for years without entering.
Qasr Al Hosn is part of the free-entry list too. The site started as a watchtower in the 1700s before becoming home to the ruling family for years. Now it works as a museum packed with old photographs, artefacts and stories from Abu Dhabi’s earlier days.
Then there’s Al Ain Museum, the UAE’s first museum. It sits near Al Ain Oasis and gives visitors a look at ancient discoveries from the region dating back thousands of years.
Also included are Al Maqta’a Museum and Delma Museum, which honestly feel like the wildcard option because getting there includes a ferry ride.

One Museum Is Already Getting Global Attention
Another big draw will likely be the Zayed National Museum.
The museum only opened recently but has already landed on international “best places” lists. Inside, visitors can explore galleries covering over 300,000 years of UAE history, along with exhibits tied to the legacy of Sheikh Zayed.
There’s also the Abu Dhabi Pearl and the reconstructed Magan Boat, which people tend to stop and stare at longer than expected.
That said, the free weekend will probably do what these events usually do: get people through museum doors who normally wouldn’t plan a museum trip at all.
And sometimes that’s enough.
