His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is the Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai, has directed the Dubai Municipality to launch a city-wide flame tree planting drive. The drive by the Dubai Municipality sees the iconic trees being planted across the street, and here’s all you need to know about this development coming in from Dubai.
Dubai Municipality Launches Flame Tree Planting Drive
Just ahead of the flame tree season, the Dubai Municipality has launched the iconic flame tree planting drive across public parks, residential areas, streets, environmental spaces, community majlises, and vital intersections. Taking to X, Sheikh Hamdan announced this move, and it was accompanied by an animated video, which marks the start of the season. He mentioned how the flame tree blooms in summer, renewing life within the homes, streets, and gardens.

For those who aren’t aware, this tree’s scientific name is Delonix regia. It is one of the most recognisable sights in the emirate. With sweeping canopies of vivid orange-red flowers, the trees are known for typically blooming in late April. And, this continues until the end of July. In fact, it coincides with the closing of the school year and the arrival of summer, which is one of the most anticipated seasonal landmarks in the emirate.

These Trees Can Reach Up To 12 M When It Fully Matures
When the tree fully matures, it reaches anywhere between nine and 12 m tall. Moreover, it can spread up to 12 and 15 m wide. Offering generous shade across the streets, parks and open spaces, the trees are known for thriving in Dubai’s climate. After all, it requires six to eight hours of direct light daily and can easily tolerate drought. Taking just three months to grow from seed to seedling, these trees have a life span of 40 to 60 years.
There are over 50,000 flame trees that have already been planted across the roads, parks, and public spaces in Dubai. With the initiative underway, the move aligns with the emirate’s broader urban sustainability goals.
