Long before Sheikh Zayed Road looked anything like it does today, the Nasser Rashid Lootah Building was already standing tall. Completed in 1974, the 15-storey residential complex, rising roughly 65 metres, was one of the first three buildings to go up near the First Roundabout, back when the area was far less built up. Over the decades it became a familiar fixture on one of Dubai’s busiest roads, quietly watching the skyline grow up around it.

How It Became “The Toyota Building”

The name most people know it by has nothing to do with its original developers. In 1981, a neon Toyota sign was installed on the building’s roof, and it stuck around for close to 40 years. This turning the residential tower into an unofficial city landmark and a handy reference point for anyone giving directions on Sheikh Zayed Road. The sign came down in 2018 once the advertising contract expired, leaving a noticeable gap in the skyline. Toyota UAE brought it back in June 2022, after nearly four years without it, much to the relief of longtime residents who’d grown attached to the glow.

Why Is Dubai’s 52-Yo Toyota Building Getting Demolished?

The building’s real estate management has confirmed the demolition is planned for 2027, closing out more than five decades of history for the property. The news started circulating after residents began posting videos of themselves moving out and reminiscing about life in the building. For now, tenants holding valid rental contracts can stay until December 2026, giving current residents time to plan their next move before the building’s chapter officially ends.
