Most presidential visits involve meetings, speeches and carefully staged photos. But during his trip to Egypt, French President Emmanuel Macron ended up going viral for something far simpler: jogging through the streets of Alexandria early in the morning.

Macron’s Morning Jog Through Egypt’s Alexandria Got People Talking

Videos spread quickly online showing Macron running along Khaled Bin Al Waleed Street with members of his delegation while security vehicles moved nearby. And honestly, people seemed slightly surprised seeing a world leader jogging through one of Alexandria’s busiest roads like a regular tourist trying to squeeze in cardio before breakfast.

The clips quickly picked up attention across social media platforms in Egypt and beyond.

Alexandria Became The Main Backdrop Of The Visit

But the jog was only one part of a packed visit to the coastal city. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi later toured Alexandria with Macron and several officials attending the opening of the new headquarters of Senghor University.

The two leaders walked along the Alexandria Corniche before heading towards the historic Citadel of Qaitbay, one of the city’s best-known landmarks overlooking the Mediterranean.

For many Alexandrians, seeing such heavy security combined with tourists, officials and normal evening crowds all blending probably felt unusual. The city does not get this level of diplomatic attention every week.

Ancient History Also Became Part Of The Conversation

During the visit, officials presented details about underwater excavations linked to the remains of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria, which was once considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Experts explained discoveries recovered from beneath the sea over different periods. Macron reportedly showed a strong interest in Alexandria’s historical and cultural importance during the tour.

Also, culture seemed to be one of the main themes throughout the visit overall. Egyptian and French officials repeatedly spoke about strengthening cooperation in tourism, archaeology, arts and education.

That said, the images people will probably remember most are still the simpler ones. Macron is jogging past ordinary streets. Walking along the Corniche, stopping at historic sites while locals watched from nearby cafés and pavements.

The Visit Ended With Diplomatic Talks And Dinner

Later in the evening, President Sisi hosted a formal dinner for Macron, his delegation and visiting officials attending the university inauguration events.

Both leaders spoke positively about closer ties between Egypt and France. Macron described Alexandria as an important centre of culture and Mediterranean history, while Sisi highlighted growing cooperation between the two countries across several sectors.

But online, people were still mostly talking about the jog.
