Saudi Arabia and Türkiye have signed new transport and logistics agreements aimed at improving connections between the Gulf and Europe. While the deals cover a wide range of areas, they have also reignited interest in something many history lovers and transport enthusiasts know well: the Hejaz Railway. For now, nothing is confirmed. But the conversation is back.

What agreements did Saudi Arabia and Türkiye sign?

The agreements were signed by transport officials from both countries and focus on railways, logistics, infrastructure, technology and workforce development.

The goal is to strengthen transport links across the region and create smoother routes connecting Gulf countries with Europe. And if plans move forward, rail and road networks could eventually link Türkiye to Syria, Jordan and Gulf markets through a more connected transport system. For businesses, that could mean faster trade. For travellers, it raises the possibility of easier overland journeys across several countries.

Hejaz Railway Back In The Spotlight

Built during the Ottoman era, the railway once connected Damascus and Medina and was key to the movement of people and goods across the region.

But recent comments from Turkish officials suggest there is growing interest in restoring and modernising parts of the route, as mentioned in a report by Gulf News.

The vision goes beyond simply rebuilding old tracks. Authorities are discussing a wider regional network that could eventually stretch towards Oman while linking multiple countries along the way.

Governments Are Looking Beyond Borders

These latest agreements are part of a broader regional effort.

Earlier this year, transport officials from Türkiye, Syria and Jordan discussed plans to repair cross-border infrastructure over the next several years. The idea is to gradually rebuild connections that have been interrupted for more than a decade.

Also, railway restoration work has already begun on some routes near the Syrian border.

People Are Watching What Happens Next

Recent trial cargo movements travelling from Türkiye through Iraq to Saudi Arabia have reportedly shown that new transport corridors could work in practice. Still, the latest agreements suggest governments are serious about exploring new ways to connect the region. And if those plans eventually include parts of the old Hejaz Railway, one of the Middle East’s most famous rail routes may not remain a piece of history forever.
