Sharjah has quietly made a notable change to its map. Four well-known areas across Sharjah have officially been redesignated as new cities. This has put them in the same category as places like Sharjah City, Kalba, Khor Fakkan and Al Dhaid.

Four Areas In Sharjah Are Now Officially Cities

The update was announced through Sharjah’s Direct Line programme. While it may sound like a simple name change at first, it reflects how much these areas have grown over the years.

The four areas affected are Al Bataeh City, Al Hamriyah City, Al Madam City and Mleiha City.

Until now, these locations were generally referred to as regions or areas. Going forward, they will officially carry city status in their names.

People Have Seen These Areas Grow For Years

Over the past several years, Sharjah has been investing heavily across different parts of the emirate. Many communities that previously felt more isolated have gradually changed thanks to new housing developments, improved roads, tourism initiatives, and increased public services.

Mleiha, for example, has become increasingly known for its archaeological attractions and desert experiences. Al Hamriyah continues to play an important role through its coastal location and industrial activity. Meanwhile, Al Bataeh and Al Madam have also seen steady development as more people and businesses move into different parts of the emirate.

That said, officials have not yet explained whether the redesignation will bring any administrative changes.

Some Questions Still Remain

At the moment, there has been no confirmation on whether city status will affect municipal responsibilities, governance structures or service delivery.

So while the names have officially changed, details about what happens next are still limited.

What is clear, though, is that Sharjah is continuing to spread development beyond its traditional urban centres. This latest move seems to recognise the growth these communities have already experienced and the bigger role they are expected to play in the future.
