Early on Sunday morning, Sharjah Police sprang into action after a distress call came through about a motorcyclist in the Rafada desert, Al Madam. The rider had lost control of his bike, and the vehicle overturned in the sand. He was left with what doctors later described as moderate injuries, painful but not life-threatening.

The report landed at the police operations centre at exactly 7:09 am. That might sound like an ordinary detail, but it highlights how quickly the response clock started ticking. Within minutes, specialised teams were dispatched. And they didn’t go in alone. The National Search and Rescue Centre of the National Guard was roped in, sending an aircraft to help with the evacuation. In a vast desert landscape, that kind of support isn’t a luxury; it’s essential.
Swift Rescue Under Tough Conditions
Truth be told, once a motorbike goes down in an area like Rafada, things can spiral fast. The terrain is challenging, access roads are limited, and every minute wasted can exacerbate a bad situation. Thankfully, the joint response was textbook efficient. The rescue teams located the injured man, stabilised him on site, and then airlifted him straight to Al Dhaid Hospital.
Doctors there confirmed he was in stable condition. After receiving treatment, he was cleared to leave the hospital the same day. That in itself speaks volumes about how crucial the rapid coordination was.
More than just another rescue
Now, it’s easy to see this as a one-off accident. But come on, we all know how common these desert motorbike mishaps are. Riders, drawn to the open dunes, sometimes underestimate just how unforgiving the terrain can be. To be fair, it’s not hard to see the appeal; the thrill of speed across open sand is addictive. However, when rules are ignored or safety is compromised, even a minor mistake can lead to disastrous consequences.
Sharjah Police were quick to use the incident as a reminder. They urged motorcyclists to stick to approved guidelines when heading out for desert rides. It’s not about spoiling the fun, they stressed, but about keeping people alive and unhurt. Reckless driving, riding without proper preparation, or straying too deeply into rugged areas can all turn a hobby into a tragedy.

In practice, what the authorities are saying isn’t rocket science. Follow the rules. Wear protective gear. Don’t push your luck in remote places where help can’t reach you in time. It’s advice that sounds simple, yet incidents like this show how often it gets ignored.
Sharjah Police also reminded the public about the correct hotlines: dial 999 for emergencies, and 901 for general queries or non-urgent cases.
