Situated in the northeast of Jordan, Al-Azraq Al-Shamali has just earned itself a rather shiny badge of honour. It’s officially the Best Tourism Village in the World for 2025. The United Nations World Tourism Organisation has announced this title to this Jordanian town.

Al-Azraq Al-Shamali Crowned As Best Tourism Villages In The World For 2025

According to a report by XINHUANET, this recognition came through the organisation’s fifth edition of the Global Tourism Villages Initiative, after Al-Azraq ticked all the right boxes on UNWTO’s rather tough checklist. Let’s face it, not every village gets to share this kind of global spotlight, so this nod speaks volumes.

Al-Azraq is a raw, beautiful place that’s carved out of a basaltic landscape shaped by ancient volcanic activity. It’s rugged, striking and filled with black stone stretching into the horizon. Add to that a line-up of the legendary Qasr Amra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its early Islamic art.. Then there’s ancient Al-Azraq Castle, dating back to the third century AD and famously used during the Great Arab Revolt. Don’t forget the majestic Qasr Al-Harranah, from the Roman and Byzantine times, with its Greek inscriptions.

Beyond The Bewitching Ruins Of Al-Azraq

But there’s more than stone and ruins. Al-Azraq happens to be a haven for nature lovers, too. Ecological sites like Azraq Wetland Reserve, Shaumari Wildlife Reserve stand and the Dahek Reserve are places to add to your bucket list.

As stated by the Jordanian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the award is beyond the title. It displays Al-Azraq Al-Shamali’s layered identity that includes natural, cultural, and deeply authentic elements. In practice, it also puts Jordan on the map as a destination that offers something beyond the usual tourist circuit. A place where heritage isn’t just preserved in museums but lives on in the land, the water, and the people who call it home.

To be fair, this recognition isn’t a surprise to those who’ve wandered its trails. Come on, we all know a hidden gem when we see one. And now, the rest of the world does too.
