Two rare tombs were recently discovered in Egypt. These date back to the early Dynastic Period and were found in the Minya Province. The discovery, as mentioned by the archaeologist, gives new insights into the evolution of ancient Egyptian funeral architecture. Two Rare Tombs Discovered In Egypt

As mentioned by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the mission from the Supreme Council of Antiquities recently discovered these two rare tombs in the Jabal Al Tayr area. Gulf News, in its report, has mentioned how excavation revealed a collection of burials and funerary artefacts. They span from the pre-dynastic era to the late period. As further mentioned in the report, the discovery shines new light on the evolution of funerary architecture in ancient Egypt. It also shows the significance of Jabal Al Tayr as a burial ground, which spans multiple historical eras.

These Were Discovered In Minya Province

As described by Sherif Fathy, the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, it is an important addition to the archaeological record of Egypt. It broadens the understanding of how structures and rituals have developed over thousands of years. The two tombs feature an unusual architectural design. One is regarded as a unique and previously undocumented model, and the second closely resembles it and also remains quite well preserved.

The Tombs Feature A Unique Design

There are similarities between these tombs and those of King Den at Abydos. For the unversed, he is one of the earliest pharaohs of Egypt, which reinforces the historical significance of the area where the tombs were discovered. According to researchers, the first tomb was constructed with a design featuring thick walls at the base. This gradually narrows towards the top, and it is a technique that represents the early stage and architectural development, which eventually leads to the construction of the step pyramid and true pyramids.

Excavations have also uncovered individual and collective burial and human remains, with there being traces of decayed wooden coffins. There is even black-topped pottery vessels, which date back to the Naqada II and III periods. Moreover, remnants of woven plant mats, which were used in burial practices, were also found.

These findings truly give us an insight into the burial practises of ancient Egyptian times.
