In a landmark move on Tuesday, February 3rd, Saudi Arabia launched the camel passport initiative. This is basically a new regulatory and digital tool, which aims to organise the camel sector. Yes, regulating the prized camel sector, it would document ownership and identity while enhancing the service efficiency and market credibility.
What Are Camel Passports?
As revealed in a report of the Saudi Gazette, the Deputy Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture. This project forms ahis project was inaugurated by Mansour Al-Mushaiti, who is the Dep part of the ministry’s effort that comes under the National Program for the Development of the Livestock and Fisheries Sector. With the aim of unifying the regulatory and digital framework for the camel sector, the plan is to document data, ownership, health records, and breed. This would create an officially recognised difference, which would support veterinary response, regulatory oversight and even market transparency.

The camel passport would basically be a comprehensive identification document. It would contain a microchip number, passport number, camel name, gender, colour, place of birth, date of birth, breed, date and place of issuance, along with the photograph of the animals from both sides to ensure, so there is precise identity verification.

Dedicated Vaccination Record In The Document
Not only this, but the passport would also include dedicated vaccination records. As revealed in the report, it would detail veterinary immunisation and be certified with the name, signature, and stamp of the attending veterinarian.
Moreover, the project aims to enhance the market value of camels by enabling price based on accurate data. These accurate data include health status, breed, and lineage. All the while, it would also increase transparency in local and international auctions as well.
Additionally, this also supports strategic planning. After all, it would provide accurate data on the camel population by age, breed, gender, and colour. This would help guide the national livestock distribution.
