Cycling fans in Abu Dhabi will soon have something new to look forward to. A major cycling venue is set to open on Hudayriyat Island in late 2026, and one feature is already getting plenty of attention: a cycling track built on the roof. Called Velodrome Abu Dhabi, the project is expected to add a completely different kind of riding experience to the capital’s growing sports scene.

A Cycling Arena With A Track On The Roof Is Coming To Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi already has cycling routes, tracks and outdoor spaces used by riders throughout the year. But this venue is being designed around track cycling, a sport that usually takes place inside specially built arenas.

More Than Just A Race Track

At the centre of the venue will be a traditional velodrome track. For anyone unfamiliar with the sport, a velodrome is an oval-shaped cycling track with steeply angled corners that allow riders to maintain speed during races.

But the building is not only for elite athletes.

The venue is planned with training areas, fitness facilities, wellness spaces and programmes aimed at encouraging more people to get involved in cycling. Whether someone is a serious rider or just curious about the sport, organisers appear keen to make the space accessible to a wider community.

Also, the arena will be able to accommodate more than 3,500 spectators, making it suitable for large events and competitions.

The Rooftop Track Could Become The Main Attraction

What really sets this project apart is what sits above the main building. A 600-metre cycling track will run around the roof, offering riders elevated views across Hudayriyat Island and parts of Abu Dhabi’s skyline.

The rooftop circuit will be connected to ground level through a spiralling ramp, allowing cyclists to ride up and onto the track rather than taking lifts or stairs.

Local Riders May Get New Opportunities

The venue is expected to welcome both international competitions and community events once it opens.

That means residents could eventually have the chance to experience indoor track cycling without travelling abroad.

But the project is also about growing cycling culture in the city. More facilities often mean more opportunities for beginners to try new sports and for experienced riders to improve their skills.
