People in Oman will get a chance to walk through centuries of history without paying a single rial this weekend. The National Museum of Oman has announced free admission for all citizens and residents on May 18, 2026, to mark International Museum Day.
Free Entry Announced At Oman’s National Museum For International Museum Day
The celebration this year follows the global theme “Museums Uniting a Divided World”, which focuses on bringing people together through culture, stories and shared history. Inside, visitors can explore galleries covering different periods of Omani history, from ancient civilisations and maritime traditions to weapons, manuscripts and traditional lifestyles.
A Chance For Families To Reconnect With Oman’s Past
For many parents, this could turn into an easy family outing that’s both relaxed and meaningful.
The museum said the idea behind the free entry is to make knowledge and heritage more accessible to everyone. Not just tourists or history lovers, but regular residents too. Students, children, older visitors, basically anyone curious enough to walk in.
Also, there’s something about seeing historical objects in person that feels different from reading about them online. Especially for children who usually spend most of their time staring at screens.
Museums Are Trying To Feel More Open To Everyone
International Museum Day is celebrated worldwide every year, but themes have started feeling more people-focused recently.
This year’s message around unity comes at a time when many cultural institutions are trying harder to feel welcoming rather than formal or intimidating. And in Oman, the National Museum has increasingly become a space where locals, expats and tourists all cross paths.

One Day, No Tickets Needed
Visitors won’t need to pay the standard admission fees on May 18, which removes one more reason to postpone the trip. The museum hopes the initiative encourages more people to connect with Oman’s ancestral roots and cultural identity in a simple, direct way.
