If you thought Liwa had the date scene locked down for the season, Al Ain just entered the chat. The first-ever Al Ain Rutab Festival opened this past Saturday at Al Sarooj Park, and it’s running till July 31st. It’s held under the patronage of Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler’s Representative in the Al Ain Region, and organised by the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority.
Al Ain’s First-Ever Rutab Festival At Al Sarooj Park Till July 31st
It’s the second leg of the Authority’s wider Rutab Season, picking up right where the 22nd Liwa Date Festival left off last Thursday. Basically, the Authority is stringing together harvest seasons across different emirates so more farmers get a shot at the spotlight, and more of us get an excuse to go date-tasting on a Tuesday.
What’s Actually Happening At Al Sarooj Park
19 competitions, 245 prizes, and a prize pool crossing AED5 million. The fresh date categories cover Khalas, Fardh, Buma’an, Kheneizi, Shishi and Zamli varieties, alongside quirkier contests like:
1. Largest Date Bunch
2. Home Harvest
3. Most Beautiful Date-Harvest Basket
4. Creative Works from Date Palm Trunks
There’s also room for locally grown mangoes, lemons and figs.

Beyond the competitions, expect a proper heritage market, craft pavilions, entertainment programmes and exhibitor stalls from sponsors and partners. It’s open daily from 4pm to 10pm, which makes it an easy add-on to an Al Ain weekend itinerary if you’re already exploring the emirate’s oases and heritage sites.

As per the Executive Director of the Festivals and Events Sector at the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority, the festival is designed to bring farmers, experts and enthusiasts together. This makes it less about trophies and more about preserving expertise that’s easy to lose in a fast-moving city like Al Ain.
