On August 5, Taylor Farms de Mexico recalled all its iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico after the produce was linked to a cyclosporiasis outbreak across several US states. This prompted an investigation by the US Food and Drug Administration. The recalled batches reached at least 27 states, turning up at retailers, restaurants and Taco Bell outlets, as well as Marketside-brand packs at select Walmart stores.
The company’s recall notice was blunt: don’t eat the recalled iceberg lettuce, and throw it out or return it if you’ve bought it. Several different product lots and package types were affected, which is part of why US health authorities moved quickly to widen the alert.
What The Illness Actually Does
Cyclosporiasis is caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. It infects only humans; its presence on produce typically points to contact with human waste at some point during growing or handling.
The main symptom is profuse, watery diarrhoea, alongside nausea, fatigue and stomach cramps. It’s not a new problem for fresh produce, either; FDA surveillance of fresh herbs alone has recorded nine separate Cyclospora outbreaks linked to more than 1,200 illnesses and 80 hospitalisations, including a multi-state investigation tied to imported basil back in 2019.

What MoCCAE Found In The UAE
The ministry said it is monitoring international food safety alerts and coordinating with other UAE authorities to inspect shipments entering the country and verify what’s currently on local shelves. So far, no recalled lettuce has been detected here, and inspections of incoming produce remain ongoing as a precaution.

What Residents Should Do
MoCCAE has urged residents to wash all fresh fruit and vegetables thoroughly before eating. It’s recommended to buy produce only from licensed, approved retail outlets, though it hasn’t specified exactly which outlets qualify. In practice, that means government-licensed supermarkets and hypermarkets, which are subject to routine inspection by UAE food safety authorities. Anyone unsure of the origin of iceberg lettuce bought recently is advised to return it to the retailer or discard it as a precaution, in line with the guidance from Taylor Farms de Mexico itself.
