As someone who flies often (and refuses to go offline unless absolutely forced), let me tell you: this update is huge. Thanks to a partnership with Elon Musk’s Starlink, the same service is known for turning remote deserts into Wi-Fi zones.
The announcement dropped during the Dubai Airshow, and it didn’t take long for everyone to realise how big this move is. Emirates made a similar announcement just a day earlier, which means both major DXB-based airlines are stepping into a new age of in-flight connectivity.
As mentioned on their official Instagram, flydubai will begin rolling out Starlink across its entire fleet. It will start with 100 Boeing 737 aircraft expected to receive the upgrade next year. Once installed, passengers can stream in HD, join video calls, game online, and so much more.
Why Starlink Actually Works Up There
Starlink uses low-orbit satellites. Because they sit closer to Earth than regular satellites, they reduce the delay between sending and receiving data. Speed goes up and frustration comes down. Your video call doesn’t freeze right when you’re making a serious point.
The aircraft will have a special antenna fitted on the exterior to connect to the satellites, which will help maintain a stable connection and fast from takeoff to landing.
