People travelling through Abha in the next few years might end up seeing cranes, construction zones and a much larger airport slowly taking shape nearby. Because Saudi Arabia’s plans to expand Abha International Airport are now moving into a more serious phase. Officials expect construction to begin in early 2027, and once everything is finished, the airport could handle up to 12 million passengers every year.
Abha Airport’s Big Expansion Is Finally Moving Closer To Construction
The new development will be built north of the current airport site, and the project is being handled through a public-private partnership setup. Right now, authorities are still finalising which consortium will take charge of the build.
The Designs Are Almost Ready Already
A lot of the planning work has apparently already been done behind the scenes. Engineering designs for the airport are said to be about 90% complete, which usually means the project is getting close to the stage where real construction planning ramps up properly.
Once work begins, officials estimate the construction phase alone could take around five years. So travellers probably shouldn’t expect a finished mega-airport anytime soon.
Earlier last year, a joint group involving Matarat Holding, the National Centre for Privatisation & PPP and the Aseer Development Authority confirmed that four separate bidders were competing for the project.
Why Abha Matters More Now
For many people in the Gulf, Abha has quietly become one of Saudi Arabia’s more interesting tourism spots. Cooler weather, mountain views and domestic tourism growth have pushed the city into more travel conversations lately.
Also, Saudi Arabia has been investing heavily in tourism and infrastructure projects linked to Vision 2030.
Officials say private sector investments across the Aseer region have already reached around SAR 5 billion, much of it tied to hotels and hospitality developments.

There’s More Than Just The Airport Happening
Preparations are also moving ahead for the huge SAR 15 billion Soudah Peaks development backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
At the same time, plans are underway to expand King Khalid University Stadium to hold 45,000 spectators ahead of the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
So Abha is not just getting a larger airport. The whole region seems to be preparing for far bigger tourism and sports activity over the next decade.
