Abu Dhabi’s national carrier Etihad Airways and Etihad Rail have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore fully integrated air and rail travel across the UAE, a move that could soon let travellers fly into the capital and continue their journey by train.
A New Chapter For UAE Connectivity
The agreement, signed at the Arabian Travel Market, sets the stage for the two organisations to study dedicated shuttle services connecting Zayed International Airport with the Mohammed Bin Zayed City Passenger Station, plugging the airport directly into the UAE’s national railway network.
What The Partnership Could Look Like
Beyond shuttles, the partnership will also look at integrated air and rail booking options, meaning a single reservation could one day cover both a flight and a train journey, along with improved passenger services at railway stations themselves.
Arik De, Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer at Etihad Airways, said the partnership would help link air travel with destinations across the UAE, supporting tourism growth and convenience for travellers while contributing to Abu Dhabi’s long-term economic development.
Etihad Rail’s Growing Network
Etihad Rail launched its passenger services earlier this year, connecting cities and regions across the UAE and quickly building ridership. Azza Al Suwaidi, Chief Operating Officer at Etihad Rail, said the network has continued to strengthen its role in connecting communities since that launch, and this new collaboration builds on that momentum.

What This Means For Travellers
For now, the MoU does not confirm a launch date for the proposed shuttle or integrated booking services, which remain under exploration. But the intent is clear: the UAE wants arriving international visitors to move seamlessly from air to rail without the usual friction of separate bookings, transfers and terminals.
If it comes together, the model could reshape how tourists plan their UAE itineraries, opening up easier day trips and multi-city stays that combine Abu Dhabi with destinations along the rail network, all connected from the moment a flight touches down. It also reflects a broader regional trend of aviation and rail operators working together to widen the reach of tourism beyond single-city visits, giving travellers more reasons to explore the wider emirates rather than sticking to one hub. The two firms are also expected to coordinate on marketing efforts once the shuttle and booking integrations take shape, positioning Abu Dhabi and the wider rail corridor as a single, easy-to-navigate travel product for both leisure and business visitors arriving from overseas.
