Planning a road trip to Oman in a mortgaged car from UAE to Oman? If that car is still under a bank loan, there’s a document you’ll want to sort before you even hit the highway.
Why A Mortgaged Car Needs An NOC?
Chances are you’ll be asked for a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your bank if your vehicle is financed and you’re driving it across the UAE-Oman border. Banks typically ask for a security deposit equal to a percentage of the outstanding loan, plus a small processing fee, and the NOC itself can take a few working days to come through.
Industry experts say that checks are common at busy crossings like Hatta (Al Wajajah), but similar requirements can arise at other border points like Meyzad, Dibba and Al Darah too. So, it really pays to call your bank ahead of time, rather than risking being turned away.
What Documents You’ll Actually Need
Beyond the NOC, keep these handy before you set off:
- Valid car insurance that specifically covers Oman
- Valid vehicle registration (Mulkiya) and driving licence
- Valid passport and Emirates ID
Enforcement can vary by border post and by which official is on duty that day, but it’s always safer to travel prepared.

The Easier Route: Renting Instead Of Driving Your Own Car
If all this paperwork sounds like a hassle, renting is worth considering. In the UAE, several rental companies have cars already cleared to drive into Oman, with insurance and permissions included. No more NOC Hassle, paperwork taken care of by the rental company. It’s a popular workaround for anyone who doesn’t want their holiday plans held up at the border.

Sorting Your Car Insurance For Oman
If you’re taking your own vehicle, check with your insurer first. Many comprehensive UAE policies already include free coverage in Oman. If yours doesn’t, you can pick up what’s called an “Orange Card” at the border itself, though this only gives you third-party cover, meaning your own car won’t be protected in case of an accident. The shortest policy you can buy at the border runs for five days and costs around AED106.
