PM Narendra Modi took to his social media handle to drop the images of his welcoming ceremony in New Zealand. He visited the Government House in Auckland and experienced the cultural tradition. One of the highlights of his visit was the traditional Māori Pōwhiri. New Zealand often organises this traditional ceremony to welcome its guests.
The Pōwhiri is a traditional Māori welcome ceremony that is held to greet visitors and special guests. This ceremony can take place at a marae, which is a traditional Māori gathering place, or at other important locations. In this ceremony the visitors are welcomed warmly. It also helps in building a sense of respect, and friendship between the hosts and guests.

How Does The Welcome Ceremony Unfold?
This ritual begins with a karanga, a ceremonial call delivered by Māori women. Through this call, visitors are invited to enter. Hosts and guests then exchange formal speeches, known as whaikōrero, which are often followed by waiata, or traditional Māori songs. As part of the ritual, visitors also offer a gift as a gesture of peace.
One of the highlights of the Pōwhiri is the hongi. During this traditional greeting, two people gently press their noses and foreheads together. The gesture symbolises the sharing of the “breath of life” and represents friendship, trust, and the coming together of two groups.
