HH Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman has signed a new royal order that gives citizenship to 226 people. Royal Decree No. 46/2026, which was published in the Official Gazette on April 19, follows the country’s strict rules about nationality. Before being approved, every applicant must meet specific legal, social, and financial requirements.
Oman Grants 226 People Citizenship
This action shows that Oman still has strict controls over its naturalisation process. People here don’t give out citizenship easily.
How To Become An Omani Citizen?
Oman’s law on nationality is very strict. To be considered, applicants must be fluent in Arabic and have a clean criminal record. A candidate can be disqualified right away if they have a history of dishonesty or breaking trust.
Health is also important. Authorities say that applicants must not have any infectious diseases. In addition, people must show that they can support themselves and their families with a steady, legal income.
There is one more big step. People who apply must formally agree to give up their current citizenship. Most of the time, Oman does not allow dual citizenship, and this rule is still very important to the process.
Special Paths For Families And Spouses
The law lays out different paths for people who are married to Omanis. After ten years of living and being married to an Omani woman, foreign men can apply if they have children and meet all other requirements.
For foreign women who marry Omani men, the time frame is shorter: eight years. Widows can apply after living in the area for six years after their husband’s death. Divorced women can also apply if they meet certain requirements. Children inherit citizenship from their father. But in the case of the absence of a father, they can get it from their Omani mother.
When Can Citizenship Be Cancelled?
Oman also makes it clear that people can lose their citizenship. This happens when someone illegally gets a different nationality, spreads false information, or does illegal things that put national security at risk.
After you become a citizen, spending a lot of time outside of Oman without a good reason can also be a problem. Even after citizenship is granted, the authorities keep a close eye on things.
According to the Gulf News, the law has harsh punishments for fraud. People who send in fake papers or false information could go to jail for one to three years and pay fines of OMR 5,000 to 10,000, or both.

Why This Is Important
This new order from Oman shows how the country balances freedom with control. It lets new citizens in, but only if they meet all the requirements. It makes things clear for both locals and expats.
