Jebel Jais is the highest mountain peak in the UAE. And the destination, however, has temporarily closed all operations. This comes after heavy rainfall was recorded across the country. It has led to a sharp drop in the temperatures, raising safety concerns across the area. Here’s all you need to know about this development.

Jebel Jais Temporarily Closed

It was on Saturday morning when the temperature at Jebel Jais fell to 3.5°C. The NCM recorded this as one of the coldest readings in the country so far this season. However, this temperature was clocked after a heavy rain shower, gusty winds, and cool air took over the UAE between December 17th and 19th. And now the authorities in Ras Al Khaimah have temporarily closed Jebel Jais. This has been done to ensure comprehensive safety inspection and essential maintenance can be carried out after the recent weather system.

Why Is The Closure In Place?

Standing water, unstable ground conditions, and even the risk of shifting rocks, as revealed in a report of the Gulf News, have led to this precautionary decision. It should be noted that the Jebel Jais will remain closed until further notice. However, a specialist team will carry out detailed assessments. The temporary closures are also in place so that it can support maintenance work and ensure there is public safety. Due to the closure, all the activities and attractions at the mountain destination have been affected.

Other Activities Have Also Been Affected

The closure has affected Jais Flight zipline, Via Ferrata routes, 1484 by Puro, Red Rock BBQ, Bear Grylls Explorers Camp, and yoga sessions at Jais Viewing Deck Park. However, hiking and climbing are not formally shut down; authorities have urged people to exercise extreme caution. Additionally, visitors have also been advised to avoid affected routes, especially in the areas where rainfall has left the routes slippery and made the rocks loose. Although winter is the busiest time of the year at Jebel Jais, the decision to close has been taken for the well-being of the visitors.

The reopening will take place in a phased manner and will take place after the strict safety standards are met.
