Did you also hear the flying rumour about the Green Visa in the UAE going on hold? If you’ve been keeping an eye on the UAE’s freelance scene, some real half-baked rumours are making their way through social media. So, here we are to clear the air! The freelance visa programme is very much active. But, there are certain changes implemented and here’s all about it.
UAE’s Freelance ‘Green Visa’ Applications To Undergo Stricter Checks
Lieutenant General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of Dubai’s General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA), confirmed it straight to Gulf News. As stated by him to the Gulf News, freelance permits are being issued normally through official channels. So, the news of the visas not being issued is a white lie.
Yes, they haven’t stopped the programme but have issued certain stricter checks. The government has tightened auditing and review procedures to stop the few who’ve been trying to cheat the system.
No, it’s not put in place to make it challenging for the freelancer. There have been isolated cases of people attempting to trade or misuse freelance permits in the UAE. In response, the government authorities have stepped in with stricter checks for the programme to be unaffected by such scammers.
Regulating, Not Restricting
As per the authorities, these new measures will protect both the market and those working legitimately within it. The UAE’s goal remains the same: to attract global independent professionals, entrepreneurs, and creative minds to the UAE. Hence, the government urges people to stop the spread of such baseless rumours that might affect the flow of potential applicants.
Overall, the implementation of this system will make every visa issuance genuine and build trust among freelancers, clients and employers.

What Does The UAE’s Green Visas Actually Offer?
Basically, the UAE Green Residency or freelance visa lets professionals legally operate in the UAE. This reduces the need for a traditional employer or sponsor. This helps the skilled individuals like writers, designers, translators, consultants, and tech experts who prefer to work freelance.
Freelancers can apply for a licence through approved digital platforms. It offers them the opportunity to work and live in the UAE independently. But you can’t hire staff or sponsor dependents through this visa.
